Risky Business
The proposition that an operation or venture is risky is often tied to the unknown. A very large percentage of small businesses and startups don't make it past ten years. The chances of making it to the NFL, even if you are a college football player, are remarkably small, but players try anyway.
Risk is inherent in everything we do; waking up in the morning and getting out of bed is a very low risk effort, but a risk nonetheless. Driving to an office is a much higher risk process; one that many still attempt, despite those risks.
Leadership - Low Risk! Or is it?
How do you know, as a leader, that your decisions are taking risk into account? We often make decisions with the end-state in mind, but rarely do we talk about the Foundational Risk those decisions pose to our people, our team, our cohesion, or the Value felt by the people on the team.
How many times have we made decisions without accounting for the above? Do your decisions actually damage a person even though they seem to improve the bottom line? Does the damage to that person's awareness of their Value to the organization ultimately cost you either in terms of process disruption or lower productivity?
Choosing Leaders with high-impact Leadership education and experience can actually reduce your Risk Profile while increasing your productivity. Yet, most American companies continue to work the Leadership process backwards.
Can you analyze and understand your Leadership Risk? And what do you do once you know the results?
